Essential oil dilution – the key to effectiveness

By Blog Leave a comment

Dilution of essential oils – let’s talk about it! I’ve seen some overly strong dilution recommendations on social media on the past. I saw one recently which recommended 85 drops of Vetiver plus an additional 75 drops of essential oil in a 10mL roller ball bottle – for children! I saw another blend which advised users to blend 2mL of essential oil to 10mL of carrier oil in a blend for men’s purefume blend. This blend would have been in excess of 70 drops of essential oil in a 10mL bottle. This is not safe usage of essential oils! Essential oil dilution can be a contentious issue and everyone has a different opinion on how blends should be diluted, so this is just my opinion and experience here.

I believe the latter is a dilution recommended by dōTERRA, however, when you think how potent these oils are – 1 drop of Peppermint oil = 28 cups of peppermint tea – you may not need a blend this strong, depending on what your intended usage is. I personally would not recommend a blend that asks for 160 drops of essential oil in a bottle that only holds 200 drops.

In my experience, you would generally need around 20-30 drops of essential oil in a 10mL roller ball bottle for standard applications. Of course, the essential oil dilution ratio will be less for younger children, and stronger for localised applications when needed. Basically, you don’t want to be wasting your precious oils making blends that are stronger than they need to be.

If you need some essential oil dilution guidance, this chart is pretty spot on. It gives you valuable dilution guidance for babies and young children, and agrees with my recommendation above about the dilution recommendation in a 10mL roller ball bottle.

Our oils are precious and incredibly potent – please use them wisely! There is a lot of conflicting essential oil dilution information around, so if you need help, just ask. I am happy to help.
