How are Essential Oils used?

Essential oils are used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. And they are fast workers! They take 22 seconds to reach the brain, within 2 minutes they are found in the bloodstream and at the 20 minute mark they are affecting every cell in your body.

Essential oils are used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. And they are fast workers! They take 22 seconds to reach the brain, within 2 minutes they are found in the bloodstream and at the 20 minute mark they are affecting every cell in your body. Essential oils are effectively used in the following three ways.

Aromatic

The volatile nature of essential oils allows them to be easily evaporated and diffused throughout a larger space. Using this application method helps create an atmosphere where you can enjoy the calming, stimulating, and soothing benefits of essential oils.

Our sense of smell (Olfactory system) is directly linked to the limbic brain where our emotion, memory and other functions are located. The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiologic, mental, and emotional responses. When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and, almost immediately, the brain.

Essential oils can influence the brain by passing from the blood into the brain. The blood brain barrier is the most secure tissue barrier in the body. It is highly selective in order to protect the fragile tissues of the central nervous system.

In the past, oil burners have been used for the aromatic use of essential oils. These burners tend to burn the oil molecules of the essential oil and releasing fumes instead of getting the benefits of the aromatherapy. If you're buying the highest quality essential oils on the planet, you want to treat them properly, right?

An ultra sonic diffuser such as dōTERRA's Petal diffuser uses water molecules to produce a fine, light weight vapour to disperse the precious essential oils into the air. This is a highly effective way to enjoy the oils aromatically.

Topical

Essential oils are safely and easily absorbed by the skin allowing you to use a variety of topical application techniques to different parts of your body.

When essential oils are applied to the skin, their healing components are absorbed into the bloodstream by the pores and hair follicles. Once inside the bloodstream, they disperse to the specific organs and systems on which they work. Due to their natural molecular composition, essential oils are safe, non greasy and easily absorbed by the skin when applied topically.

A carrier oil is an oil that allows for an essential oil or oil blend to be placed on the body or in a roller bottle in a diluted and safe manner. dōTERRA's own carrier oil is called Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO). Removal of most of the long chain triglycerides leaving mainly the medium chain triglycerides, giving FCO it a long shelf life and increased stability and versatility as a carrier oil. FCO is not suitable for internal use. It is completely soluble with all essential oils and is colorless, odorless and it will not stain. FCO is liquid silk!

Benefits of a carrier oil:

  • Effectively transports the essential oils onto the skin and into the body
  • Enables us to use essential oils safely on adults and children
  • Saves money; up to 70-80% of an essential oil used neat will evaporate if it is not rubbed into the skin immediately
  • Enhances the effectiveness of an essential oil or oil blend

Food Additive

Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as food additives. When you sprinkle cinnamon on your oats, sip a mug of peppermint tea, or add fresh basil leaves to your spaghetti, you are actually consuming some volatile aromatic essential oil compounds. Essential oil contributes many benefits as well as flavouring and aromatic properties to foods. When in their concentrated form, essential oils can be used as dietary supplements for more targeted and potent benefits. Use as a food additive is effective because of the sophisticated physiologic processes of our bodies.

When ingested, essential oils directly enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolised by the liver and other organs and are then excreted.

The composition of essential oils is highly complex. Each constituent possesses a unique set of biochemical properties that react with cells and organs in different ways. Although these mechanisms of action are not completely understood, the positive end results have been demonstrated. However, the body is only equipped to handle appropriate doses of essential oils. Proper dosing according to labeling recommendations and other professional guidelines should be strictly followed to avoid toxicity.

“We each have the innate ability to heal ourselves. To empower ourselves with natural solutions, instead of succumbing to life-altering chemicals. There's a time and place for pharmaceuticals, but it shouldn't be the first answer, nor the only form of treatment” ~ Dana Arcuri
