Essential oils are used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. And they are fast workers! They take 22 seconds to reach the brain, within 2 minutes they are found in the bloodstream and at the 20 minute mark they are affecting every cell in your body. Essential oils are effectively used in the following three ways.

Aromatic

The volatile nature of essential oils allows them to be easily evaporated and diffused throughout a larger space. Using this application method helps create an atmosphere where you can enjoy the calming, stimulating, and soothing benefits of essential oils.

Our sense of smell (Olfactory system) is directly linked to the limbic brain where our emotion, memory and other functions are located. When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and, almost immediately, the brain.

Essential oils can influence the brain by passing from the blood into the brain. The blood brain barrier is the most secure tissue barrier in the body. It is highly selective in order to protect the fragile tissues of the central nervous system.

In the past, oil burners have been used for the aromatic use of essential oils. These burners tend to burn the oil molecules of the essential oil and releasing fumes instead of getting the benefits of the aromatherapy. If you're buying the highest quality essential oils on the planet, you want to treat them properly, right?

An ultra sonic diffuser such as dōTERRA's Petal diffuser uses water molecules to produce a fine, light weight vapour to disperse the precious essential oils into the air. This is a highly effective way to enjoy the oils aromatically.

Topical

Essential oils are safely and easily absorbed by the skin allowing you to use a variety of topical application techniques to different parts of your body.

When essential oils are applied to the skin, their healing components are absorbed into the bloodstream by the pores and hair follicles. Once inside the bloodstream, they disperse to the specific organs and systems on which they work. Due to their natural molecular composition, essential oils are safe, non greasy and easily absorbed by the skin when applied topically.

A carrier oil is an oil that allows for an essential oil or oil blend to be placed on the body or in a roller bottle in a diluted and safe manner. dōTERRA's own carrier oil is called Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO). Removal of most of the long chain triglycerides leaving mainly the medium chain triglycerides, giving FCO it a long shelf life and increased stability and versatility as a carrier oil. FCO is not suitable for internal use. It is completely soluble with all essential oils and is colorless, odorless and it will not stain. FCO is liquid silk!

Benefits of a carrier oil:

  • Effectively transports the essential oils onto the skin and into the body
  • Enables us to use essential oils safely on adults and children
  • Saves money; up to 70-80% of an essential oil used neat will evaporate if it is not rubbed into the skin immediately
  • Enhances the effectiveness of an essential oil or oil blend

Internal

The French Model, which promotes taking essential oils internally, was originally advocated by three prominent aromatherapists: Jean Valnet, Paul Belaiche, and Henri Viaud. Internal use involves consuming essential oils in a vegetable capsule or softgel. You can also drop essential oil in a glass or stainless steel drinking bottle.

Whether you are taking capsules or the oil itself, essential oils can be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions. Many essential oils are generally regarded as being safe for dietary use, but some oils should not be taken internally. Do not use any essential oil product internally that does not have the appropriate dietary supplement facts on its label. dōTERRA have 22 food grade oils, which are wonderful for adding to food. Think Coriander for your stir-fry, Cardamom for your curry, Basil for your pasta or Cinnamon Bark for your baking.

Be sure to use only 100 percent pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils and follow all label warnings and instructions. An important aspect of using essential oils is regarding them on an individual basis, noting their specific chemistry, beneficial effects, safety considerations, and appropriate application methods. Consult your physician before using essential oils if you are pregnant, are under a doctor's care or have any health concerns.

“We each have the innate ability to heal ourselves. To empower ourselves with natural solutions, instead of succumbing to life-altering chemicals. There's a time and place for pharmaceuticals, but it shouldn't be the first answer, nor the only form of treatment” ~ Dana Arcuri
