Managing stress…naturally

When I first started using dōTERRA essential oils nearly two years ago, it was largely for stress and sleep related issues. At the time I knew I needed natural solutions but was not sure what to use and where to look.

At the time, I was suffering from insomnia and some fairly heavy workplace related stress. I worked in a stressful job and was desperately seeking an alternative to medication which I was becoming more and more reliant on. The first essential oil I really had success with in terms of managing stress was Frankincense and it remains my favourite essential oil today.

The stress response is the body’s way of dealing with a perceived threat. The problem starts when the threat never leaves. And this is the kind of stress that modern society is attempting to deal with.

The typical way to deal with stress is through the prescription and use of sedatives. Essential oils contain constituents that are both calming and stimulating. In fact, researchers have found that, depending on the state of the individual, essential oils can be either stimulating or calming. It’s almost like essential oils are able to know what is required to help.

Essential oils to assist with stress and anxiety:

• Clary Sage
• Rose
• Melissa
• Marjoram
• Wild Orange
• Sandalwood
• Bergamot
• Vetiver
• Lavender
• Frankincense

Diffuser and roller ball blends to assist with stress and anxiety include:

  • Lavender, Clary Sage, Wild Orange and Ylang-Ylang
  • Patchouli, Bergamot and Frankincense
  • Lavender Peace (calming blend), Balance (grounding blend) and Vetiver

A few simple tips to assist overcome anxiety:

• Count to 10 slowly

• Take deep breaths

• Accept that you cannot control everything

• Learn what triggers your anxiety

• Accept imperfection and uncertainty

• Keep a journal or diary

• Talk to someone

• Regular exercise, eat well, limit alcohol and caffeine

Another useful tip for helping you to overcome an anxiety-inducing situation, such as giving a public speech, is to tell yourself this: ‘I Am Excited’. Excitement isn’t too far off from anxiety. The difference is excitement is generally a positive emotion while anxiety is negative. But in terms of the physical changes in your body, excitement and anxiety are difficult to distinguish. And so, when you’re anxious, it’s not a stretch for your body to channel those negative feelings into positive ones of excitement instead.

These are simple solutions, and there may be more severe cases of anxiety that require treatment, so please see your health care professional if you need to.

If you would like samples of any of the above essential oils or blends please let me know. If I can help others overcome stress using natural health solutions, my job is partially done!
