Winter is coming – are you ready?

It’s May here in Australia which means winter is just around the corner. So what does that mean? Now is the time to get your immune boosting strategies lined up so you can sail out of winter and into spring feeling fabulous.

The immune system is made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body. One of the important cells involved are white blood cells, also called leukocytes, which come in two basic types that combine to seek out and destroy disease-causing organisms or substances.

Here are some areas of your health that need particular attention if you are aiming to keep the winter bugs at bay. Of course, this is a simple list, and you are recommended to discuss any concerns with your health practitioner.

Stress:
Chronic stress and depression can weaken the immune system and makes us more vulnerable to illness. We talk about nutrients, vitamins and minerals to support your immune system, but there are some lifestyle choices you can make too. High stress levels weaken your immune system. Sometimes you can’t eliminate all the causes of stress in your day-to-day life, but listen to your body and when it asks for time off. Activities like reading, having a bath, walking, running, yoga, pilates and meditation can be effective in releasing tension and stress.

Some of my favourite essential oils to assist with stress and anxiety are:

Frankincense, Lavender, Vetiver, Bergamot, Sandalwood, Wild Orange, Marjoram, Melissa, Clary Sage and Balance, the grounding blend.

Diet:
You need many nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, D and E, as well as minerals selenium and zinc, and Omega 3s, to support your immune system. Focus on eating whole foods, such as quality animal protein (if you’re an omnivore), legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds, as well as plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid processed meats, fried foods, soft drinks, processed baked goods, or products with artificial sweeteners or refined sugars. Eating too much of them suppresses the immune system. The foods you want to limit during this season are foods highly processed with little or no nutritional value and foods high in sugar.

It’s known that about 80% of our immune system is located in our digestive system. So keeping a healthy gut is very important to keep a strong immune system. Get fermented foods such as raw sauerkraut, miso, yogurt, kefir, kimchi into your diet and take a good quality probiotic such as dōTERRA’s Probiotic Defense Formula PB Assist. PB Assist is a proprietary formula of pre-biotic fiber and six strains of probiotic microorganisms.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and powerful immunostimulant. The most concentrated food sources include capsicum, chilli, oranges, blackcurrants and strawberries. Citrus fruits, parsley, papaya, cabbage and broccoli are also good sources.

Sleep:
Sleeping issues is one of the common health issues people talk to me about when I teach essential oil classes. Chronic fatigue is known to increase risks of illness. The body rejuvenates and strengthens when it’s at rest. The amount of sleep a person needs depends on many factors, including age. In general:

  • Infants require about 12-15 hours a day
  • Toddlers require about 11-14 hours a day
  • Pre-school children require 10-13 hours a day
  • School-age children require 9-11 hours a day
  • Teenagers need about 8.5-9.5 hours on average
  • Adults need 7 to 9 hours a night for the best amount of sleep

Some of my favourite essential oils and blends for for sleep are: Frankincense, Vetiver, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Wild Orange, Marjoram, Cedarwood, Juniper Berry, Balance, the grounding blend and Lavender Peace.

Exercise:

Exercising is not only a great way to get in shape, but it also increases our immune function, improves sleep quality, and makes our body stronger. If you do not have any health conditions that prevent you from exercising, make sure you find the time to workout, even if it’s only a walk.

So what are my winter immune boosting and bug busting hacks?

All of the above, plus these:

  • I take 2 On Guard beadlets every morning.
  • At first sign of a scratchy throat, I gargle 2 drops of On Guard blend and two drops of Tea Tree.
  • If I feel a bug coming on, I’ll take two On Guard softgels in the morning and in the evening.
